Concept of Vikruti to self-correct vedic recitation
samalsatyaswarup@yahoo.com
To ensure accuracy in Vedic tradition which was predominantly an oral tradition, I came across the mechanism of introducing Vikrutis while chanting the Vedic slokas. There are eight of them which rearranges the words in a verse using specific algebraic rules. More research (from the mathematical side) is required to establish, How such an arrangement (or Vikruti) or words (padas) implements "error checking" mechanism. It is fascinating that people in Vedic age had a strategy which not only detects error but also corrects them!
I could not find a reference which lists all the Vikrutis, their primary source (e.g. sloka) along with few examples. Although many online blogs and commentaries explain Vikrutis but I don't trust their authenticity.
Can anyone please help me with some textbook or paper which explains the rules to construct the eight different Vikrutis ? Moreover, Vikrutis can have different forms e.g. mala vikruti has pushpa-maala (flower garland) and Krama-maala as two forms
I hope my query fits to the interests of the group & Rajiv ji
Thank you & Best Regards,

Hemraj Sharma
***********

The probable 'common substratum' between tholkAppiam & Aṣṭādhyāyī of Pāṇini, may be the Shiva Sutras, as my research had suggested.

1." I think much of the works of Tamil scholars is sadly influenced by this Aryan-Dravidian myth"
'Aryan-Dravidian myth's entry into Tamil writings gained momentum only after 1944 with the birth of DK. Most of the scholarly works prior to 1944, as well as nationalist Tamil writers after 1944 were not influenced by the myth.
2. "The oldest Tamil literary work Tholkapiam starts with a homily to scholars in the Vedas. Genetic evidence gives irrefutable proof that there is a common substratum that connects all Indians."
The probable 'common substratum' between tholkAppiam & Aṣṭādhyāyī of Pāṇini, may be the Shiva Sutras, as my research had suggested.
My research article’ Musical Phonetics in tholkAppiam’ was published in the year 2014 issue of the journal from the International Institute of Tamil Studies, Taramani, Chennai.
The findings may be related to the rhythmic phonetic dimension of ‘Mahashiva Sutras’ in Sanskrit; “The Shiva Sutras (IAST: Śivasūtrāṇi; Devanāgarī: शिवसूत्राणि) or Māheśvara Sūtrāṇi (Devanāgarī: माहेश्वर सूत्राणि) are fourteen verses that organize the phonemes of Sanskrit as referred to in the Aṣṭādhyāyī of Pāṇini, the foundational text of Sanskrit grammar “( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Shiva_Sutras )
Also I had posted my findings in http://musictholkappiam. blogspot.in/.
But if the musical phonetics dimension of the ‘Misahashiva Sutras’ is a disjoint ( related note below) with the Aṣṭādhyāyī of Pāṇini, then the above grammar related 'common substratum' may not be present.
Note: " There are many problems which may be raised concerning the formulation of SS (Shiva Sutras) and the use of the resultant abbreviatory terms ; problems relating to the order and the selection of sound - segments -----------------------. A detailed discussion of these and other problems relating to the SS may be found in Cardona (1969)- 'Studies in Indian Grammarians: The Method of description Reflected in Siva Sutras' (by George Cardona , Philadelphia, American Philosophical Society ) ”
From the published Ph.D thesis is ' Studies in pANini' by H.P. Dvivedi - Inter-India Publications, Delhi ( 1978).

The Story of Paesi or Paesi-Kahanayam is a lively dialogue between the monk Kesi and prince Paesi based on the Rayapasenia Agama. Interestingly, the Paesi Kahanayam is the only large legend common to both Jain and Buddhist canonical literature. It is found in the Jain Rayapasenia Agama and in the Buddhist Dighanikaya.
The monk Kesi and the prince Paesi (Sanskrit – Pradeshi) discuss the corporeality of the soul, whether it dies with the body or is distinct from the body. The prince is a materialist and argues in favour of the corporeality of the soul but the monk convinces him that the soul and body are distinct and while the body is corporeal, the soul is eternal. This dialogue is set in the 6th century BCE, the age of reflection on and discussion of the soul. While the present literary form dates some Centuries later, the discussion is still as relevant today, after two millennia.
This edition contains the Prakrit text in Devanagari and Roman transliteration, accompanied by an incisive English translation, exhaustive notes and a glossary.
The arguments in this discussion reflect many ancient Indian realia - birth rituals, diseases, etiquette, ethnic list of female servants, execution of thieves, regicide, the 72 professions, similes, etc. which have been commented upon in the notes.
